The VFW understands how important the education of our future generations is and feels it is important to acknowledge elementary, middle school, and high school teachers who go above and beyond to teach citizenship education related topics regularly and promote America's history and traditions effectively and award them the Smart/Maher National Citizenship Education Teacher Program. This award program provides the winners with cash awards, commemorative plaques, and even the opportunity for the winners who go on to national to get an all-expenses-paid trips to the VFW National Convention.
Nominees will be divided into three categories: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12 and will start out by being nominated to our post. From there, local post winners will then be submitted to our district and department (state) levels where for judging. Winners from the department (state) level will then be sent on to the national level for consideration and selection.

Perhaps you know a teacher who invites Veterans into their classroom to speak to the students? Do you know a teacher who fosters and encourages the development of democratic values in their students? If you do, then why not nominate them and have them recognized!
